Amul

Founded in 1946, Amul is one of the oldest and most successful food brand of India. The ‘utterly, butterly, delicious company, was founded in Anand, Gujarat by Dr Verghese Kurien, also known as the Milkman of India.

Amul, soon in Europe:

Amul is all ready to launch its products in Europe starting with Spain and later expanding it to other countries, as stated by Jayen S Mehta, GCMMF Managing Director.

In March 2024, the company for the first time launched it’s product outside India in USA.

How Amul was born?

The history of Amul begins when a cooperative movement was formed in Anand, Gujarat against Polson Dairy, who at that time procured milk from the local farmers of Kaira district and then sell it to the Bombay government at better rates. The farmers of Anand stood against this and took the plea to the government.

This resulted in the formation of the Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Limited, Anand in 1946.The aim was to provide fair remuneration to the farmers and produce quality products.

Amul found it’s real shape when in 1949, Dr. Verghese Kurien came to Anand to manage a dairy as a government employee. He came with a vision and launched,The White Revolution or Operation Flood (13 Jan, 1970), which was World’s largest dairy program and  wasIntended to make India  a self-dependent nation in milk production.

Later, with the vision of Dr. Kurien in 1973 ,the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) was created, which now is the largest exporter of dairy products in India under the Amul brand.

Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF)

Today GCMMF ranks 8th among the Top 20 dairy companies in the world in terms of milk processing, according to the International Farm Comparison Network (IFCN).

The word ‘Amul’, was derived from ‘Amulya’, which meant ‘precious’ or ‘priceless’ is an acronym for Anand Milk Union Ltd.

Who doesn’t know the cute polka dot girl on amul butter packet? For us, it’s not just a picture, it’s a memory of our childhood.

The Amul girl was also created by Eustace Fernandes as a response to Amul’s rival brand Polson’s butter-girl in 1976.
