In a groundbreaking move, Chennai has become the first city in India to introduce air-conditioned lounges specifically for delivery workers. These thoughtfully designed spaces provide much-needed comfort to those braving the streets all day delivering food, groceries, and packages.
Set up by the Greater Chennai Corporation, the rest lounges can seat up to 25 people and come equipped with essential amenities like clean drinking water, mobile charging points, and hygienic washrooms. The interiors, inspired by modern Scandinavian design, create a welcoming atmosphere for gig workers seeking a break.
Built at a cost of ₹25 lakh as part of a pilot initiative, this marks an important step in acknowledging the hard work of delivery professionals and supporting their well-being.
“Earlier, we had no place to sit or rest—we waited outside restaurants,” shared Anupriya, a delivery executive. “Now we finally have a safe place, even at night. It shows someone is thinking about us.”
