14 March 2024 – In response to the Indian government’s recent advisory on artificial intelligence (AI), the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) has advocated for significant revisions aimed at targeting applications posing higher risks of spreading misinformation. Highlighting the need for clarity on “significant platforms” and a streamlined approval process, GTRI emphasizes the importance of fostering AI growth while effectively combating false information dissemination.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued the advisory to regulate AI applications, particularly on social media platforms, following controversies surrounding Google’s AI platform’s responses regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The advisory aims to label undertrial AI models and prevent the hosting of unlawful content, with non-compliance risking criminal action. However, GTRI contends that modifications are necessary to ensure the advisory’s efficacy in promoting responsible AI development.
