"Kannadigas Are Not Beggars": The Dispute between Nirmala Sitharaman and Siddaramaiah Over the State Share Intensifies

26 March 2024 – Chief Minister Siddaramaiah attacked Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for supporting government-funding devolution, claiming she did not get the idea of the states’ legitimate share as the Centre and Karnataka’s dispute over state share intensified.

On Sunday, Sitharaman said that the Karnataka government’s accusations that it has not gotten its fair portion of funding were “utterly baseless” and that they were not included in the Finance Commission’s final recommendations.

The CM said on social media site X: “It is expected that the nation’s finance minister would tell it how it is. Regretfully, she has persistently rejected the written word.” Due to a “five-month delay” in the release of drought relief, Karnataka has dragged the Centre to the Supreme Court.

Conclusion

Karnataka claims that the final report of the 15th Finance Commission recommended Rs 6,000 crore for the state, Rs 3000 crore for the revival of water bodies, and Rs 3000 crore for Bengaluru’s Peripheral Ring Road. “The Ministry of Finance, under the leadership of Mrs Nirmala Sitaraman, refused to accept these two recommendations, thus denying the rightful share for Karnataka,” he said.
