08th May 2024 – Sony Pictures Networks India has sent legal notices to several startups featured on Shark Tank India for using clips from their pitches in online ads. Sparsh Agarwal, founder of Dorje Teas, brought this to light on LinkedIn, stating that Sony targeted every startup using snippets from the show on digital platforms like websites and social media.
Agarwal highlighted the irony of startups boosting Shark Tank content, only to face copyright issues. The consequences include social media posts being flagged for infringement, affecting business operations. Yashwant Budhwani, CEO of Hoora Technologies, expressed frustration over their Meta ad account being disabled.
Legal experts clarify that Sony, as the show’s producer, owns the episode and can enforce copyright laws. Swapna Sundar, Senior Partner at PVS Giridhar Associates Law Chambers, explained Sony’s rights over the integrated content.
In response, Shark Tank India directed alumni startups to refrain from using show material on their platforms to avoid copyright infringement.
