12 April 2024 — The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has introduced a Regulatory Sandbox (RS) proposal to stimulate innovation in the digital communication sector amidst technological advancements like 5G/6G, AI, IoT, and VR.
Objectives of the Sandbox
The RS framework aims to create a conducive environment for testing new technologies, services, use cases, and business models within live networks, facilitating refinement and development.
Empowered by the Telecommunication Act of 2023, the Central Government has authorized the establishment of regulatory sandboxes to promote innovation in the telecommunication sector.
The proposed framework outlines eligibility criteria, application procedures, evaluation processes, and reporting requirements for participants, ensuring accountability and fairness.
Emphasizing network security and consumer protection, applicants must propose risk mitigation measures, consumer protection mechanisms, and exit strategies.
Permissions granted under the RS will be valid for up to 12 months, extendable as needed, with potential financial support for deserving innovations under the Telecommunication Act of 2023.
Conclusion:
The RS framework is anticipated to benefit the digital communication industry’s startup ecosystem by providing access to real network environments for testing new applications, fostering innovation and technological advancement.
