13 April 2024 – Based in Visakhapatnam, Small business Yallas Technologies Solutions Pvt. Ltd., run by Y Bhagya Lakshmi, a woman entrepreneur, acquired a domestically created technology known as “Roshini.” It is the first saltwater-based lantern in India, and it powers the LED lights by using seawater as the electrolyte between electrodes that have been specifically made.
The National Institute of Ocean Technique (NIOT) in Chennai created the technique with a license from the National Research Development Corporation (NRDC). According to Dr. BK Sahu, head of the NRDC-Visakhapatnam, Dr. Purnima Jalihal, director of the NIOT’s energy and freshwater section, is credited with creating Roshini.
“This creative lantern is an example of accessible and sustainable technology. It runs on salt-infused tap water or saltwater, which is noteworthy for its affordability and mobility. Scientist and IP expert Dr. Bhavya Manjeera, assistant manager of the NRDC-Vizag, has patented, protected, promoted, and commercialized the invention, according to Dr. Sahu.

The lantern was presented to USPTO director Kathi Vidal, US IP counselor to South Asia John Cabeca, US Consulate General Chennai Mr. Christopher W. Hodges, and US Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and USPTO CMD Commodore Amit Rastogi (Retd) and Bhagya Lakshmi during a recent international symposium.
