Industrialist Anand Mahindra once shared his own skepticism until a Mumbai-based surgeon proved him wrong. The tale of his daughter’s successful surgery highlights the potential of Indian expertise in the medical field.
Industrialist Anand Mahindra’s journey to embracing homegrown medical technology unfolded when his daughter faced a critical hand injury. Despite seeking treatment abroad, it was a Mumbai-based surgeon who ultimately provided a simple yet effective solution, sparking a revelation for Mahindra and instilling confidence in indigenous medical expertise.
Speaking at the fourth Atal Bihari Vajpayee Memorial Lecture, Anand Mahindra recounted the challenges his family faced when his daughter required microsurgery for a hand injury. Despite turning to specialist surgeons in Paris and London, the desired outcome remained elusive. It was only upon consulting Dr. Joshi in Mumbai that a breakthrough occurred.
Dr. Joshi’s innovative approach, utilizing a humble metal eyehook costing just two rupees, proved instrumental in his daughter’s recovery. This low-cost, homegrown solution not only facilitated successful surgery but also enabled his daughter to resume playing the piano within a decade.
