Doctor Discovers Grandparents’ Forgotten SBI Shares Bought in 1994, Now Worth Rs 3.75 Lakh

3 April 2024 – A doctor’s viral post on X about the “power of equity” has captivated netizens, detailing his discovery of his grandparents’ long-forgotten SBI shares purchased in 1994. The shares, originally valued at Rs 500, have appreciated 750 times over three decades, now amounting to Rs 3.75 lakh.

Dr. Tanmay Motiwala, a paediatric surgeon, stumbled upon the shares while organizing his family’s assets and decided to share his discovery on X. The SBI shares, which his grandparents had completely forgotten about, held immense value, underscoring the potential of long-term equity investments.

Responding to inquiries about the shares’ current valuation and the demat conversion process, Dr. Motiwala revealed that the shares were worth Rs 3.75 lakh, excluding dividends. Despite the lengthy and cumbersome demat conversion process, which required assistance from a consultant, the family managed to convert the majority of their physical share certificates to digital format.

Dr. Motiwala expressed his intention to hold onto the shares for the time being, highlighting the dividends of long-term investment and the lack of an immediate need for cash. His post struck a chord with many users, prompting them to share their own stories of equity investments and the power of compounding.
