Telangana govt. Push for 100% exemption for Electric Vehicles.
Given the growing pollution levels in India, now is the ideal time to promote and adopt electric vehicles (EVs). Recently, To promote the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and reduce air pollution, the state government of Telangana has introduced a policy offering a complete exemption from road tax and registration fees for EVs purchased and registered within the state. This exemption will be in effect from 18 November, 2024 for an initial period of two years, lasting until December 31, 2026.
The exemption will apply to electric two-wheelers, four-wheelers, commercial passenger vehicles such as taxis, three-seater autorickshaws, electric light goods carriers (including three-wheeled goods carriers), tractors, and buses. Electric vehicles operated by the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation, as well as buses owned by any industry for exclusive employee transportation (not for commercial use), will be fully exempt from road tax and registration fees for their entire lifespan.
These exemption will benefit two wheelers with 15000 tax saving and four wheelers upto 3 lakhs.
Earlier there was an exemption for 5000 EVs which has been lifted to unlimited registration of EVs under the exemption.
During a recent press conference held at the Secretariat on Sunday, Transport Minister PonnamPrabhakar, accompanied by Special Chief Secretary Vikas Raj and Transport Commissioner SurendraMohan, announced that an order to this effect had been issued the previous day.
The Transport Minister also mentioned Telangana Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage Policy 2020–2030 has already started the promotion to adopt EVs in the state and till now around 1.70 lakhs of EVs have been registered in the State.
Govt. appeal to the people of Telangana
Prabhakar Appealed people to choose electric vehicles (EVs) to help reduce pollution in the state and protect the environment for future generations. He also mentioned that both, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister MalluBhatti Vikramarka are dedicated to making Hyderabad a cleaner and greener city.
To support this goal, there are plans to create a policy that will retire vehicles older than 15 years and establish automatic vehicle testing centers. Prabhakar highlighted the serious issue of road safety, noting that around 150,000 people die in road accidents in India each year, with about 20 of those fatalities happening daily in Telangana.
As part of a road safety campaign, an NGO is working to raise awareness about safe driving before issuing driving licenses.
Telangana govt. is also planning to implement a policy that will scrap vehicles older than 15 years and establish automatic vehicle testing centers.
