India Makes Space History: Agnikul Cosmos Launches Agnibaan Rocket, Anand Mahindra Reveals Investment

3rd June 2024- India’s space exploration took a significant leap forward as Agnikul Cosmos, a startup incubated at IIT Madras, successfully launched the Agnibaan SOrTeD rocket from Sriharikota’s privately developed launchpad, ‘Dhanush.’ This achievement marked India’s first semi-cryogenic engine-powered rocket launch, entirely designed and manufactured domestically.

Chairman of Mahindra Group, Anand Mahindra, proudly disclosed his investment in Agnikul Cosmos, emphasizing the talent and innovation of young Indians involved in the project. The rocket, Agnibaan, is a two-stage vehicle capable of carrying payloads up to 300 kg to a height of 700 km. It operates on liquid oxygen and kerosene-powered engines.

Agnikul Cosmos highlighted the rocket’s advanced features, including in-house designed data acquisition systems, flight computers, and a fully developed autopilot. Notably, the flight demonstrated controlled ascent with full 3-axis control, meeting expectations with a 65-second burn time.

Moreover, Agnibaan marked several technological milestones, being the first Indian launch driven by Linux-based computers and employing an ethernet-based architecture for connecting flight computers. It also utilized aviation-grade jet fuel and industrial-grade liquid oxygen.

Looking ahead, Agnikul Cosmos aims to launch an orbital mission by 2025, furthering India’s presence in space exploration. With this successful launch, India’s space industry is poised for significant growth and innovation.
