At the UN Summit of the Future, Google CEO Sundar Pichai unveiled a new initiative to enhance global AI education and training. Pichai emphasised that artificial intelligence (AI) is “the most transformative technology yet,” offering unprecedented opportunities for global progress.
AI for Sustainable Development
During his address, Pichai outlined four key areas where AI could drive sustainable development:
- Language Accessibility: AI will help people access information in their native languages, making knowledge more inclusive.
- Scientific Advancements: AI can significantly speed up scientific discoveries, aiding in research and innovation.
- Climate Disaster Management: AI-powered tools will provide real-time alerts and tracking of climate disasters.
- Economic Growth: AI has the potential to fuel economic progress, particularly in developing nations.
Addressing AI Risks
While Pichai praised AI’s potential, he also acknowledged its risks. He pointed out the dangers of deepfakes as a key concern but did not delve into AI’s environmental impact. Instead, his focus remained on the positive global transformation AI can foster.
$120M Global AI Opportunity Fund
To prevent a global “AI divide,” Pichai announced Google’s $120 million Global AI Opportunity Fund. This initiative aims to offer AI education and training in underserved communities worldwide, in collaboration with local nonprofits and NGOs.
Call for Smart AI Regulation
Pichai stressed the importance of smart regulation that balances mitigating risks and fostering innovation. He warned that poorly designed regulations could widen the AI divide, limiting the technology’s benefits and stifling global progress.
