India Expands UPI Services to Sri Lanka and Mauritius, PM Modi Inaugurates Virtually

New Delhi, 12 February 2024 – In a significant stride towards digital connectivity, India launched its Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius. The virtual inauguration ceremony witnessed the participation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, and Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth. Alongside UPI, RuPay card services were also introduced in Mauritius.

Launch Details:

The initiative aims to facilitate UPI settlement services for Indian nationals travelling to Sri Lanka and Mauritius, as well as for Mauritian nationals journeying to India. The extension of RuPay card services in Mauritius will empower local banks to issue cards based on the RuPay mechanism, fostering seamless transactions between India and Mauritius.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized the significance of the occasion, labelling it a special day for digital connectivity between India, Sri Lanka, and Mauritius. He highlighted India’s achievements in Fintech innovation and Digital Public Infrastructure, underscoring the nation’s commitment to sharing developmental experiences and innovation with partner countries.

The extension of UPI services and RuPay cards is expected to enhance digital connectivity and expedite digital transactions between the involved countries. This move aligns with India’s commitment to fostering international partnerships in the realm of financial technology.
