In an exciting development for India’s manufacturing sector, Wabtec Locomotive Private Limited, a joint venture between Indian Railways and Wabtec, is gearing up to export its Evolution Series locomotives to Africa starting in 2025. This strategic move marks a pivotal step toward positioning India as a leading global player in locomotive manufacturing and aligns with the government’s initiatives to boost local production and economic growth.

Marhowra Plant: A Hub for Innovation

Located in Marhowra, Bihar, the plant was established in 2018 with a vision to produce high-quality locomotives for Indian Railways. With a production capacity of 100 locomotives per year, the facility is now set to expand its operations to include international exports. The locomotives produced here, specifically the ES43ACmi model, are equipped with a robust 4,500 HP engine. These machines are renowned for their fuel efficiency and reliability, especially in challenging high-temperature environments.

Aligning with National Initiatives

This export initiative is a testament to the Indian government’s “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) campaigns. By producing locomotives domestically, India aims to reduce its reliance on foreign imports while enhancing its manufacturing capabilities. The project is expected to create long-term job opportunities and stimulate the local economy by increasing the demand for local suppliers and components.

Strengthening the Indian Economy

The collaboration between Indian Railways and Wabtec has already resulted in the successful delivery of over 650 locomotives to Indian Railways. This partnership showcases the effectiveness of public-private collaboration in advancing the country’s manufacturing prowess. As the Marhowra plant prepares for exports, it will not only contribute to job creation but also boost industrial activity in Bihar, fostering economic growth in the region.

Looking Ahead: A Bright Future

With the Marhowra plant on the cusp of its first exports, the future looks promising for Indian Railways and Wabtec. This endeavor not only signifies a significant milestone in India’s manufacturing journey but also reinforces the country’s commitment to becoming a global hub for locomotive production. By leveraging local talent and resources, India is well-positioned to meet the increasing global demand for high-quality locomotives.
