Pune Crypto Trader Falls Victim to Scam Through X Encounter

3 April 2024 – A 22-year-old crypto trader from Pune fell prey to a scam, losing Rs 2.5 lakh from his crypto wallet after downloading an app recommended by a potential employer he met on X. Naved Alam, a product designer, recounted the incident, emphasizing the importance of caution when engaging with online opportunities.

Alam’s ordeal began with a seemingly promising opportunity presented to him on Twitter by a user named @crankybugatti, regarding a design role for a web3 communication app called Social Spectra. As the conversation progressed to Discord, Alam found the interaction to be legitimate, with basic design questions being asked and his work being praised. However, when directed to join an HR call via a provided link, Alam unknowingly fell into a trap.

Believing he was downloading an in-house communication app for the call, Alam instead installed malware that swiftly drained his crypto wallet and liquidated his staked assets, resulting in a loss of approximately Rs 2.5 lakh. Despite reaching out to @crankybugatti for recourse, Alam received empty promises and fabricated assurances.

Reflecting on the incident, Alam stressed the importance of vigilance and verification when encountering job offers or downloading unfamiliar software online. He urged others to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of opportunities before proceeding.
