As Gmail Turns 20, Sundar Pichai Says, "I'm Glad It Wasn't an April Fools' Day Prank"

02 April 2024Google CEO Sundar Pichai pondered on Gmail’s incredible history, which started on April Fools’ Day, as the email service marked its 20th anniversary on Monday. “@gmail, happy 20th birthday! Happy it wasn’t an April Fools’ joke after all,” he said with a happy emoji on X, the old Twitter. On April Fool’s Day in 2014, Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin released the beta version of Gmail.

When Gmail first began, it was a free service with a gigabit of storage per account—roughly 13,500 emails. Marissa Mayer, a former Google employee who assisted in the creation of Gmail and other firm products before going on to become CEO of Yahoo, said, “The original pitch we put together was all about the three ‘S’s” — storage, search, and speed.

The Google CEO, using his X account, sent a clever tribute on Gmail’s 20th anniversary, writing, “Happy 20th birthday, @gmail! I’m relieved that it wasn’t an April Fool’s joke after all.

Conclusion

In response to the tweet, social media users congratulated Pichai on Gmail’s 20 years of existence. Few people are aware that Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the company’s co-founders, first believed Gmail’s debut to be an April Fools’ prank.
