Humane, Sam Altman-Backed Startup, in Talks with Indian Telcos for AI Pin Launch

29 February 2024Humane, a startup backed by Sam Altman, is in preliminary discussions with Indian telecom operators for the launch of its innovative Humane AI Pin device. The startup, founded in 2017 by former Apple executives Bethany Bongiorno and Imran Chaudhri, has gained significant attention, having raised approximately $200 million from investors such as Microsoft, Qualcomm Ventures, and Sam Altman’s OpenAI.

The Humane AI Pin, designed to revolutionize the interaction between users and artificial intelligence (AI), is sparking interest not only in the U.S., where it has partnered with T-Mobile but also in international markets, including South Korea. Now, the startup is setting its sights on India, with early conversations underway with local telecom operators.

The Humane AI Pin and Its Features:

The Humane AI Pin, priced at $699 with a $24 monthly subscription, introduces a unique approach to human-computer interaction. The device, which can be attached to clothing or accessories, employs a combination of voice, gesture, and touch inputs to enable users to access a range of AI services. From search and translation to navigation, the AI Pin offers a multifaceted experience. T-Mobile serves as the launch partner in the U.S., and recent international plans involve collaboration with South Korean carrier SK Telecom.

Imran Chaudhari, Chairman and President at Humane, revealed that the overwhelming interest from India prompted the startup to initiate discussions with Indian telecom operators. While T-Mobile has been a key partner in the U.S., Humane is exploring strategic partnerships to cater to the diverse Indian market.

Chaudhari highlighted the device’s potential in various use cases, particularly in the medical space, where it could aid in diagnoses through contextual computing capabilities. The AI Pin represents a new approach to technology interaction, offering users an alternative to conventional smartphones.

Conclusion and Vision:

As Humane expands its footprint globally and explores partnerships in India, the startup envisions a future where technology seamlessly integrates into people’s lives. The AI Pin, designed as a companion device, aims to complement smartphones rather than disrupt them. Humane’s goal is to provide users with a novel and liberating way to engage with technology, fostering a better relationship between individuals and their devices. The startup’s emphasis on presence and freedom reflects a broader shift in consumer preferences, indicating a growing demand for innovative and user-centric tech solutions.
