This fiscal year, the Income Tax department is going to launch a campaign to find people and organizations that are supposed to submit tax returns but have either neglected to do so or have avoided paying taxes.
According to department officials who spoke to the Economic Times, the Income Tax department has already identified 15.2 million individual taxpayers who have income or have had tax deducted at source (TDS) but have yet to file tax returns.
Beginning on April 15, or the next week, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has instructed its field officials to get in touch with these people. A top official said, “Many individuals and entities had their tax deducted at source but did not file returns.”
Conclusion
Roughly 89 million taxpayers were registered in 2022–2023; 74 million returns, including amended returns, were submitted. Estimates indicate that 19.7 million people have incurred TDS but not submitted income tax returns (ITR).
